Kettle Valley railroad trestles (7/20)

Sunday morning we had breakfast and got ready to hike the Kettle Valley Railroad Trestles at Myra Canyon.  Rita and Ivor usually bike it but we don't have bikes so we hiked.  This is the first time they have walked it and really enjoyed walking it and seeing things you don't notice while riding a bike.  This is an old railroad route that has all these great trestles that took the train over the canyons.

We did 6 of the trestles which was 5.5 km for a total of 11 km total (around 7 miles).  Some of these trestles still have the original wood on them.  A fire went through here a while back and burned several of them.  The lumber companies in Kalowna donated lumber and materials to rebuild the damaged ones.  Rita told us that when they first started riding their bikes here they didn't have the wood walkways on the trestles and you had to walk your bikes across the railroad ties, some of them have big spaces in between them, as I found out when I didn't look where I was stepping and my foot went between the ties, fortunately I hit a beam below them so I didn't hurt myself.  Some are built in curves one even is a kind of s curve.

There were a couple cool tunnels you had to walk through!

What a great day we had, so much fun.  Thank you Ivor and Rita for showing us your backyard.
