What to except in the Sierra's (Alan and Nicole this is for you)
Spent the day hiking the Sierra Back country of Sequoia National Park to Heather Lake at 8,600 ft. through ankle to thigh deep snow banks. Feet got wet and frozen (of course I did not have my leather Danners on as it was 76 degrees in Three Rivers when I left at 6:00 am) and my hands were just as frozen because in Arizona we NEVER hike with gloves. The only things that kept me from getting my cold shivers (Alan can explain those) was the spectacular scenery and the thought of Alan & Nicole trudging across the Mojave

Sequoia National Park
Monday we drove into the park and did some site seeing and to get our barrings as to what we wanted to do the rest of the week. We stopped at Moro Rock and hiked to the top, only about a 300 ft elevation gain with plenty of stairs and guard rails to keep you from falling. Once at the top the view is unbelievable.
Then it was time to head back to Three Rivers, my how time flies when you are having fun.
For all pictures of Sequoia go to my photos page, I will be updating it shortly.
Zydeco Blues Fest
Last Saturday was spent at the Zydeco Blues Festival. We arrived at Spanish Landing park in San Diego around 10:15 had to wait about 30 min. for the gates to open. Once in the sounds of music and the smell of Cajun food hits you. It takes a while to get used to all the different sounds and smells. As you walk through the food area everything smells so good. It is hard to decide what to eat it all smells so good.
We start out at the Bourbon Street Stage where Tyler Ray Davidson & Leilani Kilgroe are playing the blues. Tyler is only 17 years old and very good.
From there is just got better. There were so many good bands to watch. Joe and I come to this festival every year and are never disappointed.
Our favorite bands this year were Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band. This is band is zydeco at it's finest.
Then there was Ladies Shoes Blues Review with Sue Palmer. This is an all woman boogie woogie and Blues Extravaganza. Sue Palmer always puts on a great show and this year was no exception especially since she added one of our favorite blues ladies, Deanna Bogart, who plays saxophone and keyboards and some times she plays them at the same time. She is awesome.
The last show of the day was quite possibly the best of the day, Nick Gravenites, Mark Hummel and Deanna Bogart with Johnny Vernazza, the Legendary Chicago Blues. These are some of the blues great players and they definitely did not disappoint us. Mark Hummel on the harmonica was one of the best I have ever seen, add the legendary Johnny Vernazza on gutiar and Deanna Bogart on sax and keyboards and you had the makings of one unbelievable performance, but then they added legendary blues singer and guitar player Nick Gravenites. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!

Needless to say by the time the show was over we were on music overload and ready to head home. What a great day

Two for One
Friday we went on Captain Dave's Whale and Dolphin watching tour. What a beautiful sunny day to be out on the ocean. We boarded the Manute'a at 10:30 and were off by 10:45. We barely got out of the harbor when the captain pointed out the sea loins on the harbor rock barrier. There were so many of them and it was quite funny some of the positions they were laying in.

Soon after a female gray whale with a baby was spotted along with bottle nose dolphins. They are so big and cumbersome looking. This was very rare to see them this close to the harbor, you almost never see them interact with the dolphins. There were three bottle nose dolphins that appeared to be leading them out to the ocean away from the harbor wall. We watched them for quite awhile before heading further out to see what else was out there. The whales are hard to see, they are the dark gray bumps in the water.
We went out further and saw another female gray whale with a baby. They didn't show themselves very much so I didn't get a picture. Later the captain spotted a Minke (or stinky) whale. They are small and have
a very bad odor, hence the nick name of stinky. I wasn't able to get a good picture of this one either. :0(
But here is one from their web site.
Me standing on the front of the catamaran, which is the type of boat we were on.
As we were coming back into the harbor we saw this great old ship heading to Catalina. It is called the Spirit of Dana Point.

What a fun day this was. The weather couldn't of been better and we were able to see several whales and dolphins what more could you want.
