BLYTHE ISLAND REGIONAL PARK CAMPGROUND
Very nice campground located just West of Brunswick, GA nestled between the Brunswick Sound boat docks, a chain of lakes and marshy swamps with hiking, biking trails and boat docks. Easy access to town, Jekyll Island and Golden Isles Speedway and great area for my evening walks.
JEKYLL ISLAND
This beautiful island is the main attraction in this sleepy quaint town of Brunswick. It was the winter home to the RICH & FAMOUS in the early 1900's until the mid 1940's when Florida became developed and the in place to be. The mansions built among the huge old growth oak trees are spectacular to tour and it was said at one time 1/6th of the worlds wealth was gathered here. This is bikers heaven with bicycle paths leading EVERYWHERE so we rented bikes and rode until JoAnn's legs couldn't pedal anymore. The rich folks would hot rod around the island in battery powered carts which could reach speeds of 40 MPH.
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Another fascinating island to roam around on and as usual we could not resist climbing to the top of their lighthouse located in Neptune Park.
FORT FREDERICA NATIONAL MONUMENT
Built in 1742 by the British to protect their colonies from the Spanish who occupied territories to the South (Florida). The town led by James Oglethorpe eventually grew to 1,000 inhabitants at it's peak.
There were many battles between the two countries to control this worthless swamp land with the British finally winning the Battle of Bloody Marsh to gain control. The structures were constructed of brick (famous Georgia red clay) and a cement concoction of mud, sand and oyster shells.
